Scientific Journals
What is a scientific journal?
It is a formal space for academic communication publishing original research results submitted to peer review, and is part of the scientific communication system as a mechanism for validation, certification and spread of knowledge.
From his perspective, the journal is not only a means of spread, but a central actor in the scientific ecosystem, whose function must be aligned with principles of open access, equity, sustainability and science as a common good.
Diamond Open Access Publishing Model for Scientific Journals
Diamond Open Access is a model of scientific publishing promoting free, equitable, and sustainable access to knowledge, eliminating both reading barriers and costs for authors. Unlike other open access models, the Diamond does not charge article processing fees (APCs), which makes it an inclusive alternative favoring the participation of researchers from all over the world, regardless of their economic resources.
In this model, scientific journals are generally funded by academic institutions, universities, research centers, libraries, or consortia, as well as by public funds or non-profit initiatives. This allows the contents to be available free of charge to anyone with access to the internet, promoting the democratization of knowledge and strengthening open science.
This model not only benefits authors and readers, but also contributes to global scientific development, by facilitating the circulation of knowledge without economic restrictions. In a context where equity in access to information is key, Diamond Open Access is positioned as a sustainable, collaborative option aligned with the principles of science as a common good.
The Autonomous University of the State of Mexico implements this Diamond Open Access publishing model, in initiatives such as the Digital Periodical Library and Redalyc, platforms that strengthen open access in the region by offering scientific publications at no cost to authors and readers, thus consolidating a fairer and more accessible ecosystem for the spread of knowledge.
The Digital Periodical Library of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico is a platform created in 2010 with the purpose of preserving, organizing and spreading the editorial production of its scientific journals, in accordance with the principles of open access. Since its inception, it has sought to facilitate free and permanent access to the knowledge generated in the institution, increasing its visibility and academic impact. Among the services it offers are online consultation of journals, digital editorial management, content preservation, as well as various tools that support the processes of publication and scientific outreach, strengthening the communication of knowledge within and outside the academic community.
Redalyc is a platform created in 2003 with the purpose of making visible, preserving and strengthening open access scientific production in Latin America and other regions of the world. Promoted by the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, it comes as an initiative aimed at consolidating a non-profit publishing model, based on diamond open access. Since its creation, it has promoted the free spread of scientific knowledge, increasing its reach and impact at an international level.
Among the main services offered are the indexing of scientific journals, the generation of bibliometric indicators, tools for editorial management, as well as technologies for the markup and digital publication of articles in enriched formats. In addition, Redalyc contributes to the professionalization of journals and the strengthening of scientific communication, consolidating itself as a benchmark in the open access ecosystem.
