Building Community: A new perspective on Architecture, Design and Engineering

We often think that architecture is limited to walls, design to aesthetics, and engineering to structural calculations. However, at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx),we are transforming that vision: today we understand these disciplines as the way in which we decide to inhabit the world. For us, each blueprint, each prototype is, in essence, an ethical commitment to society.

On April 27, under the lead of our Rector, Dr. Martha Patricia Zarza Delgado, we celebrated the Encounters of Science: “Fortaleciendo el Diseño, la Arquitectura y la Ingeniería” [“Strengthening Design, Architecture and Engineering” in English]  before more than 130 specialists and students, we set ourselves a vital challenge: to break away from inherited hegemonies that sometimes distance academia from its environment. Instead, we bet on a science with a Latin-American seal, one that does not look outward, but toward the needs of our own territory.

How is this vision materialized? It is seen in projects that put body and heart into the territory. We discussed research ranging from the optimization of our Potrobus routes to the design of motorcycle taxis with a gender perspective. These are not just data; it is engineering for peace and architecture for inclusion ensuring that the right to the city is not a slogan, but a reality for everyone.

Technology, under our Open Science model, stops being a barrier and becomes a bridge. Seeing our young people immersed in the USINIX laboratory, exploring 3D environments with Oculus Meta Quest 2 headsets and high-performance processors (intel i9 and RTX 4090), is proof that the technical avant-garde can and must be democratized. At UAEMéx, access to these tools no longer depends on privilege, but on talent and the will to transform.

As an institution that contributes 37% of SNII researchers in these areas at the state level, our responsibility is to set knowledge free. By promoting open resources and free licenses (SIL OFL), we ensure that the creativity of our designers and engineers is public good.

This is the Accessible University that we are consolidating. An institution that not only images the future, but builds it with technical rigor and human sensitivity. Let us continue to demonstrate that, at UAEMéx, creativity and science are the foundations of a more dignified future for all.
